Storytelling

This project was one of my first that wasn't created for purely intrinsic reasons. I was approached by the 8th Army Band leadership when I was serving as an Audio Production professional about creating a marketing piece for our incoming STB Battalion commander. The original intent was to give the new BN Commander an overview of what the 8th Army Band capabilities consisted of and to demonstrate how we operate on a day to bay basis. Ultimately, the project ended up being used by the band in the recruiting of KATUSA soldier in Korea.

I was given a small budget for the first time for some camera rentals so I chose to shoot with a Canon 5D and used a few different lenses. I also used a HDMI viewfinder as most DSLR cameras do not have a sufficient screen to check for focus and composition in creating a shot. I also created the project with a GoPro for some stylistic images as well. All of the editing was completed in Final Cut Pro X and titles were generated with Motion 5.

Recently, I completed a Master of Science degree in Instructional Design and Technology. One of my favorite elements of this degree is the video projects that I completed along the way. This video was the Capstone deliverable required for graduation.

This video is a short guide to The Matheson Method of Music Performance. I am highly passionate about the music making process. I have had many great experiences professionally as a musician and am increasingly aware of the changing music industry and how the traditional music education methods are continually falling behind. I created this method to begin changing the narrative about music education and this particular method only represents one aspect of music education progress.

I absolutely love to tell stories. As part of my masters degree with Full Sail University, I had the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of interesting projects. For this project, students were provided with a short video segment and had to create a story based off of the provided images. After some initial brainstorming, it was quickly evident that the story was about the people of Osceola County Florida and how they were as resilient as the structures that they built. I selected the music that would have been popular at the time and performed all of the narration. I have a secondary narration as well with a local talent named Don Eller and hope to one day provide the alternative take.

As a side note, this project was selected by the instructor to be included in the Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek on-site presentation.

This is another Full Sail project that I had a great time making and I feel that the project helped to make me a more proficient storyteller! In this project, the individual video clips were provided but in a randomized order. Some of the clips didn't even match each other but were performed by the same group of actors. The assignment was to review the clips and find a potential story that explained conflict resolution.

The first draft was a complete failure! I was approaching the assignment from a clinical standpoint, rather than a story approach. Once I saw how the characters related to each other, it was an easy adjustment in the narration and storyboarding process to complete an assignment that told the story of how a prior relationship was significantly effecting a current relationship. This conflict was further complicated by the couples lack of communication.

Not every story requires visual elements to be effective. The Queen Bee was a project for the Instructional Design and Technology Program during month 7. The challenge was to select a Grimm's Brothers fairytale, provide narration, and use music and sound effects to create an auditory story. I had so much fun with this one that I plan on releasing a short album of fairytales and short stories that follow a similar format in 2020. Special thanks to Nathan Salas of Lab Audio for providing his talents in voicing the Dwarf!

Every now and then I get to do some freelance work. This was a short promo for Independence Steel and Rigging, LLC that was put together for marketing purposes. This is a new angle on an industry that I am familiar with so I had a lot of fun with this project. I started collecting video footage and after a few months I had enough to get started. I love the steel industry and am glad I got the opportunity to spend some time in it!
